The New York Mets acquainted themselves with the city of Syracuse Tuesday, home of the organization’s new triple-A affiliate.

The team held a free open workout at the Carrier Dome, the university’s arena which has seen greats like Donovan McNabb and Carmelo Anthony grace its floor since 1980. The workout featured almost everyone who will be on the Opening Day roster, however, one notable member of the team was not in attendance.

Jacob deGrom was back in New York undergoing a medical checkup as the 2018 National League Cy Young Award winner had inked a five-year extension worth $137.5 million in the day’s early hours.

“We’re really excited to have Jake for a few more years and put these talks behind us,” outfielder Brandon Nimmo said.

When asked how comfortable he was having deGrom locked up for the next five years, Mets’ manager Mickey Callaway played his cards fairly close.

“Do we?” he replied with a smirk. “I’m not sure if that’s confirmed yet, but I want Jacob here as long as possible.”

deGrom will be starting on Thursday against the 2017 NL Cy Young winner, Max Scherzer, in Washington D.C. as the Mets open the season against the Nationals.

“(Scherzer) is a great pitcher,” Nimmo said. “Whether he’s hitting his locations that day or not, he’s going to come after you. He’ll pitch the way he’s supposed to, but we’re going to go look for some mistakes that we can capitalize on.”

Another dominant pitcher on the Mets, Noah Syndergaard, made amends for his comments earlier in the week which criticized the team’s trip to Syracuse just two days before its first game.

Syndergaard ran a lap around the dome with the university’s flag in hand, before stopping on the school’s logo and the 50-yard line and waving the flag to cheers from the crowd.

“He understands how special this was for all the fans and he wanted to do something for them,” Callaway said of Syndergaard. “That’s one thing about Noah, he’s always going to be here for the fans, and there’s no doubt about it.”

Syndergaard poked fun at the situation stemming from his remarks on his Instagram page Tuesday night, when he posted a picture of himself waving the flag at midfield with the caption, “THANK YOU SCRANTON! I LOVE YOU!”

While the trip to Syracuse two days before the season starts may not have been ideal, moving the location of the organization’s triple-A team from Las Vegas to Syracuse could not have been better.

“We’re really excited about the partnership with Syracuse,” Nimmo said. “I know, being a guy who was in Las Vegas and had to come back and forth, that this is going to be a lot easier for those guys. I think it’s going to help their health and the health of our team overall.”
