ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team held the lead heading into halftime, but Saint Joseph’s University won 71-65 on Wednesday at the Reilly Center.
The loss marks the second time this season the Bonnies lost a game after leading at halftime.
Six minutes into the game, Bonaventure led by three until the Hawks used a 9-2 run to take their first lead.
The game stood tied at 19 until Saint Joseph’s capitalized on a 7-0 run to take a seven-point lead. The Bonnies responded with an 11-2 run. They led 30-28 at halftime.
The Hawks opened the half on a 14-3 run. Both teams scored 11 points each for the next five minutes, allowing Saint Joseph’s to keep a 7-point lead.
Bonaventure answered with a 14-2 run, taking their first lead since the first minute of the second half with nine minutes left. The Hawks responded with a 16-4 run, leaving the Bonnies scoreless for four minutes.
Redshirt Junior Dasonte Bowen ended the drought with 27 seconds left, but the Hawks won by six.
Bonaventure falls to 14-12 with the loss (3-10, A-10), while Saint Joseph’s improves to 16-10 (8-5, A-10).
Saint Joseph’s senior guard Derek Simpson led all scorers with 23 points. Junior guard Buddy Simmons II led the Bonnies with 18 points.
The Bonnies return to action on Saturday when they travel to the University of Richmond. Saint Joseph’s returns home on Saturday to take on Loyola University Chicago.
