ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure University men’s basketball team dropped its conference home opener to the University of Richmond 89-80 Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.
Bonnies junior guard Darryl “Buddy” Simmons recorded a team-high 18 points while senior forward Frank Mitchell grabbed 12 rebounds. Spiders graduate guard Will Johnston led all scorers with 24 points and senior center Mike Walz had 10 rebounds.
Through the opening six minutes, the teams traded baskets and kept the score tied at 10.
Over the next four minutes, the Spiders outscored the Bonnies 9-2 and took a 19-12 advantage.
Richmond owned a 10-point advantage with three minutes left in the opening half. In the final three minutes of the first half, St. Bonaventure scored 10 of the next 13 points, cutting their deficit to 40-37 at halftime.
Four minutes into the second half, Johnston scored 10 points in a 14-4 run to extend their lead to 54-41.
Richmond increased its advantage to 75-59 with 4:52 remaining in regulation.
The Bonnies narrowed the deficit to 77-69 with a 10-2 run.
Both teams scored nine points in the final minute.
St. Bonaventure drops to 11-4 (0-2, A-10) while Richmond advances to 12-4 (2-1, A-10).
The Bonnies host Fordham University on Saturday, Jan. 10, while the Spiders host Saint Joseph’s University on Sunday, Jan. 11. Both games begin at noon and will air on USA Network.
