BOCA RATON, Fla. – The St. Bonaventure University men’s basketball team finished its three-game Florida road trip with a win over Florida Atlantic University Sunday afternoon at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

Bonaventure senior guard Cayden Charles led the team with 16 points, while senior forward Frank Mitchell had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Through the first three minutes of the game, the Bonnies led 9-4. Four Bonaventure players recorded points.

After nearly three scoreless minutes, the teams traded baskets until the 11:44 mark, when the Bonnies held a 13-9 lead.

Owls redshirt sophomore guard Devin Vanterpool, son of former Bonaventure basketball player David Vanterpool, hit a three-pointer to cut the Florida Atlantic deficit to 21-18 with 7:43 left in the first half.

Over a minute later, the Owls tied the game at 21 after Florida Atlantic junior guard Kanaan Carlyle made a three-pointer.

Florida Atlantic junior forward Xander Pintelon capped off the Owls’ 10-0 run with a dunk to put them up 24-21 with 5:08 left in the first half.

The Bonnies responded with an 8-3 run of their own over the next two minutes, including a three-pointer from senior forward Daniel Egbuniwe, earning the Bonnies a 29-28 lead.

Bonaventure led 34-32 at halftime.

In the first four minutes of the second half, the Bonnies used an 11-6 run to expand their advantage to 45-38.

Florida Atlantic scored seven points from 14:26 to 13:31, with five coming from redshirt freshman guard Amar Amkou, to cut the Bonnies’ lead to 48-47.

Within two minutes, the Bonnies restored their seven-point lead behind six points from freshman guard Achille Lonati.

The Owls inched within two points with 8:39 left in regulation, but Bonaventure scored seven of the game’s next nine points.

Florida Atlantic made its last push with 58 seconds left, when Owls redshirt sophomore forward Devin Williams’ dunk cut the Bonnies’ lead to 68-65.

Charles sank two free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the visitors’ 70-65 victory.

Bonaventure improved to 7-1 while Florida Atlantic dropped to 5-3.

The Bonnies return home on Wednesday, Dec. 3, to host Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania at 7 p.m. The Owls visit Florida Gulf Coast University on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m.

Bonaventure’s game will air on ESPN+, Bonnies Online Network, 100.1 FM Bradford and Olean, 1340 AM Jamestown, 106.9 FM Hornell and 92.1 FM Rochester.
