ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The match was fairly even throughout the first half, with several defensive stops and overall even play at the start.
The Bonnies got on the board first in the 12th minute when graduate student Daniela de Souza buried a low shot to the right corner, putting the Bonnies ahead 1-0. The lead didn’t last long, as Saint Joseph’s freshman Chelsea Leal responded just two minutes later with a low-right strike of her own to even the match at one apiece.
Throughout the next 30 minutes, both teams put on a defensive showcase. Bona’s sophomore goalkeeper Adelaide Paredes stopped several key shots, including a low-right shot from senior Natalee Vicari. Vicari had an answer to this, scoring a last-second goal at the start of the 44th minute, putting the Hawks up 2-1 going into the half.
Bonaventure started the second half aggressively, pushing the pace and earning multiple corner kicks and free kicks in the first 20 minutes. However, despite several close chances, including a 66th-minute shot by graduate student Paula Sanabria Diaz that hit the left post, they could not shift the momentum.
The dagger came in the 81st minute when SJU’s sophomore Sarah Fisher scored off an assist from Chelsea Leal, extending the Hawks’ lead to 3-1. Despite late offensive efforts from Bonaventure, they could not pull out the win.
With this loss, the Bonnies’ record moves to 3-10-2 (0-7 A-10), and the Hawks move to 5-9-1 (2-5 A-10).
The women’s soccer team hopes to turn the season around next against Dayton on October 19th at 1:00 p.m
