ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.- The St. Bonaventure men’s soccer team used two late second-half goals to comeback against the George Washington Revolutionaries, winning 2-1 Saturday evening at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Bonaventure’s two second half goals came 2 minutes and 15 seconds apart from each other, which proved to be the difference.
In the first half of play, effective defense from both squads kept the game scoreless. Through 45 minutes of play, George Washington managed three shots, none on net, while Bonaventure tallied five shots, one on net.
In the second half of play, the game’s first score occurred. At the 50:10 mark of the second half, Revolutionary graduate forward Tommaso Lami notched his first goal of the season, earning George Washington a 1-0 lead.
Just over 28 minutes later, the Bonnies responded. Graduate midfielder and the Bonnies’ leading scorer, Seth Hammond, recorded his fifth goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
At the 81:11 mark, Bonaventure’s late offensive push continued. Bonnies senior midfielder Dean Mercer handed Bonaventure the lead after he scored his first goal of the year.
In the remaining few minutes of play, George Washington registered two more shots but were unable to tie the game, finalizing the Bonnies’ 2-1 victory.
St. Bonaventure advances to 3-4-2 (1-1-1, A-10) while George Washington falls to 2-6-2 (0-2-0, A-10).
Bonaventure will visit Cleveland State at Krenzler Field on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m., while the Revolutionaries host George Mason Saturday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m.
