DAVIDSON, N.C. – After a long battle, the St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team lost 2-1 to the Davidson Wildcats at Alumni Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.

Thursday was the Bonnies’ first Atlantic 10 Conference away game under its new coaching staff with Melissa Sherwood as head coach and Fabio Barras as assistant coach.

With the Wildcats’ victory, they advance to 4-2-1 (1-1 A-10), while the Bonnies fall to 3-4-3 (0-2 A-10).

The Bonnies started strong in the first half, with senior defender Hannah Walker netting her first ever collegiate goal at the 2:26 mark, to give Bonaventure a 1-0 lead. Despite the Bonnies finished the first half 1-0, the Wildcats had 21 shots, with five on goal, giving them the momentum heading into the second half.

Davidson sophomore midfielder Sophia Whiddon knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 39:48 mark, making the rest of the night a tight, physical match.

At the 27:14 mark, the referees made a controversial call, declining to give the Bonnies a penalty kick after Bonaventure sophomore forward Ekemini Udofa was nearly fouled in the box. The Wildcats took this opportunity to make a counterattack, which, despite promise, was eventually ruled offside, leaving the game level.

Soon after, the game was put into a lightning delay that lasted just over an hour.

After the delay, around 11 p.m., Wildcats senior midfielder SJ Pac delivered the game-winning goal with 6:09 minutes left in the second half, putting the Davidson Wildcats up 2-1 and closing out the game.

The Bonnies will look to rebound back at home for their next A-10 match-up on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Rhode Island at the Marra Athletics Complex. Davidson will stay at home to face their next opponent, Loyola Chicago on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
