Can Anyone in the East Take Down the Celtics?

Basketball is back, and there are plenty of storylines surrounding the upcoming NBA season. The Boston Celtics are coming off an impressive run, winning the NBA championship last season against the Dallas Mavericks to claim the franchise’s 18th title. With the team bringing back its core, Boston aims to go back-to-back. But several teams have made significant moves this offseason to challenge their reign. So, who is poised to stop the Celtics from repeating as champions?

The New York Knicks are among the teams making serious offseason upgrades. The Knicks acquired four-time All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns in a trade that sent Donte DiVincenzo and Julius Randle, both crucial in last year’s playoff run, to Minnesota. The Knicks are going all-in for a championship, with Towns joining superstar Jalen Brunson and other key additions, including OG Anunoby, whom they traded for in January. They also brought in star forward Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets. After finishing as the second seed behind the Celtics last season and falling in Game 7 of the second round to the Indiana Pacers, the Knicks are eager to build on that success. The question is whether they can develop the chemistry needed to win it all.

The Philadelphia 76ers are another team looking to dethrone the Celtics. While the Knicks haven’t faced the Celtics in the playoffs recently, the 76ers are all too familiar with losing to Boston. Over the last six years, Philadelphia has been eliminated by the Celtics three times, most recently in 2023, when they blew a 3-2 series lead in the second round. The 76ers also exited early last season, losing to the Knicks in six games. This offseason, they signed nine-time All-Star Paul George to a four-year, $211 million deal. Despite being 34, George is still performing at a high level, and paired with reigning MVP Joel Embiid and rising star Tyrese Maxey, the Sixers are in win-now mode. With NBA champion head coach Nick Nurse at the helm, they may finally have the tools to get over the hump.

The Milwaukee Bucks, unlike the Knicks and 76ers, have tasted championship glory more recently, winning the title in 2021. While the roster has changed since then, the Bucks still boast two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and three-time All-Star Khris Middleton. Last offseason, Milwaukee acquired eight-time All-Star Damian Lillard, a blockbuster move to strengthen their chances. They also brought in head coach Doc Rivers midseason, though he struggled initially. The Bucks finished third in the East last season but were bounced in the first round by the Pacers, with Giannis sidelined and Lillard missing two games. Staying healthy will be crucial if Milwaukee hopes to challenge the Celtics. With the right coaching and a full-strength roster, the Bucks could be serious contenders.

While other teams in the East may pose threats to the Celtics, the Knicks, 76ers, and Bucks seem best positioned to challenge Boston’s dominance. The Celtics remain the favorites, but the moves made by these rivals are all geared toward taking them down. Will Boston live up to expectations and defend their title? Or will one of the challengers make a run at the crown? The NBA is as unpredictable as ever, and that’s what makes it so exciting.
