Emmys Recap

Emmys Recap

By Keeley Reiford

From “Only Murders in the Building’ to “The Bear,” the Emmys had a variety of actors and performers attend the event. Starting at 8pm and ending at 11pm, the event consisted of multiple awards, including Best Supporting Actor, Lead Actress and many more. Many industry icons including Meryl Streep, Catherine O’Hara and Jean Smart were nominees in this fantastic award show. In addition to a star-studded audience, the hosts this year were Dan and Eugene Levy. These two are Canadiens who wrote multiple shows, including “Schitt’s Creek.” This year, compared to the other years, had some important stand out moments, other than Will Smith yelling at the host in 2022.

One of the moments that stood out was the recognition of different archetypes. This included actors who played cops, coaches, villains, and many others. A few who stood out to me was the addition of Jane Lynch, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Brendan Hunt, the actor who plays Coach Beard in Ted Lasso. There were also other notable people here, but these were the ones that I recognized. This extra exposure allowed for the actors and actresses to offer more insight on what the award they’re presenting is about. I hope they return this tradition, because it allowed beloved characters from shows that are over to return for the fans to see.

Another moment that piqued my interest is the domination of “The Bear” in the awards. Whenever someone was nominated for a role in “The Bear”, nine times out of ten that character would win an Emmy. The domination was very clear when Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Paul Rudd, and Meryl Streep lost in their respective categories. I am in no way saying that I dislike The Bear, it’s just interesting to see such good actors and actresses lose to The Bear. In addition, some of the other shows that received Emmys were “The Crown”, “Hacks”, and “Shogun”, which won more than 10 Emmy’s at a showcase before the debut on Sunday.

Finally, the other thing that I thought was fun is the Schitt’s Creek family reunion for the last award for the night. If you don’t know, the show Schitt’s Creek consisted of a family called the Rose Family, made up of actors Dan and Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy, and Catherine O’Hara. Luckily, all four of them were there and the family got to reunite to announce the last award of the night. My whole family loves the show, which is why I proceeded to yell when I saw this reunion of the Rose Family after the show ended. This was just a fun moment for me, considering I was already sad because Only Murders in the Building did not win any awards.

Considering the fact that the host did not get slapped, and everyone looked beautiful, the Emmys went on like how it normally does. The hosts were fantastic, the crowd was great, and Jimmy Kimmel gave a great speech about Bob Newhart, which was really beautiful. Every detail was well thought out, and everyone appreciated the return of their favorite character in their archetypes.
