Josh Allen Overrated?

Josh Allen Overrated?

By Julian Mackool

On August 27, ESPN surveyed over 100 NFL players on quarterbacks. One of the questions asked was “who the most overrated quarterback?” Josh Allen had 11 votes, declaring him the most overrated quarterback. Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts tied for second, each receiving 10 votes. From the votes, there isn’t a big gap between players who think they are overrated. However, Josh Allen being brought up or even receiving a vote is ridiculous.

Since entering the NFL, Josh Allen has been criticized. It makes sense because when he was drafted in the first round by the Buffalo Bills in 2018, he was seen as a project that needed some work and needed to prove why he should have been drafted. But since he’s been in the league, he’s gotten better and better. Since 2020, his full-breakout year with the addition of All-Pro receiver Stefon Diggs, he has had 17,540 yards, 137 touchdowns, and 57 interceptions in 66 games. These statistics are without his rushing numbers, as he has 38 rushing touchdowns and counting. Compared to Patrick Mahomes, who is the best quarterback in the NFL by many people, his stats are 19,012 yards, 143 touchdowns, and 45 interceptions in 65 games since 2020.

Since 2020, Josh Allen has led the league in touchdowns by almost 20. This year will be prove-it season as Josh Allen is without Stefon Diggs, who led the Bills in receiving the last four seasons.

Since 2020 in the playoffs, Josh Allen has proven that he doesn’t need Diggs as he has not been a factor in most of their playoff games. Diggs has had 47 catches for 600 yards and two touchdowns in nine games since 2020. Josh Allen’s playoff stats since 2020 include 2,459 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and four interceptions in nine playoff games. Josh Allen has proven in the most significant moments that he doesn’t need Diggs.

So far, in 2024, as I’m writing this, after the week one win over the Cardinals, Josh Allen still looks like the same Josh Allen with 232 passing yards, two touchdowns throwing, and 2 touchdowns with his legs. He doesn’t look overrated to me. Buffalo will go as far as Josh Allen can take them; this year, they can go far.
