ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure University women’s basketball team opened its season with a 68-56 victory over D’Youville University at the Reilly Center.

The Bonnies’ defense played a key role, holding the Saints to 34% from the field. They also forced 19 turnovers.

However, St. Bonaventure got off to a slow start in the first quarter, struggled offensively and trailed 18-11 heading into the second.

The Bonnies found their rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Saints 15-9 to cut the deficit to one point heading into halftime.

Bonaventure took control in the third quarter, scoring 23 points and taking its first lead on a free throw from senior forward Brillana Boyd to go ahead 28-27. The Bonnies never trailed again.

By the end of the third quarter, Bonaventure extended its lead to 49-42.

The Bonnies maintained their momentum in the fourth quarter, turning defensive stops into offensive opportunities to secure the victory and improve to 1-0.

Offensively, freshman forward Ella Trinkaus led Bonaventure with 21 points off the bench. Trinkaus shot 8 of 12 from the field, including 2 of 3 from the 3-point range, and she shot 3 of 4 from the free-throw line.
