ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure University men’s soccer team (3-3-2) fell to Cleveland State University (3-3-2) 2-1 on Tuesday.
In a foul-filled game, Bonaventure looked sluggish throughout the first half. The Bonnies also struggled to match the game’s physicality.
At times, however, the Bonnies showed flashes of energy. Freshman midfielder Allistair McFall created several opportunities on runs behind the defense. Senior midfielder Callum Shillington nearly gave the Bonnies an early lead, but his shot struck the crossbar.
Cleveland State scored its first goal at the 19:26 mark of the first half when junior midfielder Tom Hertz found freshman forward Domenic Ruggiero on a lateral pass. The Vikings extended their lead to 2-0 at the 23-minute mark when sophomore midfielder Uzman Ramees connected with junior midfielder Djodje Petrovic on a similar pass.
The Bonnies came out with more energy in the second half. Senior midfielder Kyle Macfarlane cut the deficit to one with a penalty kick. Bonaventure struggled to find the equalizer, with senior defender Jackson Minneci nearly tying the game on a shot that struck the crossbar.
After the game, coach Mick Giordano reflected on the Bonnies’ performance.
“Just the sports sometimes,” said Giordano. “They hit us in two moments and took advantage.”
