Bonnies lose to Davidson in Mark Schmidt’s final home game as head coach

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure Bonnies men’s basketball team ended the season with a 68-63 loss to Davidson College in Mark Schmidt’s final regular-season game as head coach Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center.

Schmidt announced after the game he will retire at the end of the season.

The Bonnies came back from a 14-point deficit in the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough to pull out the win.

Bonaventure ends the season 15-16 (4-14, A-10) while the Wildcats improved to 19-12 (10-8, A-10).

The Bonnies got out to an early 11-6 lead in the first four minutes before Davidson went on a 7-0 run to take the lead.

Bonaventure held a four-point lead until the Wildcats used a 9-0 run to go up by five.

For the next six minutes, both teams recorded 12 points. Davidson went scoreless for the final two and a half minutes of the half but carried a 36-33 lead into halftime.

The Bonnies got out to a two-point lead in the first few minutes of the second half before going nine minutes without a field goal. The Wildcats went on a 21-5 run during that stretch, taking a 14-point lead, the largest of the game.

Bonaventure then used a 13-1 run to cut the deficit to two with under two minutes to go.

Despite Davidson missing every field goal for the final eight minutes of the half, the Bonnies failed to complete the comeback.

Bonaventure senior guard Cayden Charles led all scorers with 21 points. Senior forward Frank Mitchell finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Both teams will compete in the Atlantic 10 tournament, which kicks off on Wednesday.
