George Washington defeats St. Bonaventure in overtime

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The George Washington University men’s basketball team pulled away in overtime to defeat St. Bonaventure University 91-82 on Wednesday night in the Charles E. Smith Center.

Bonaventure’s loss marks their 12th defeat by 10 or fewer points this season and forces them to play in the Atlantic 10 Tournament play-in round.

After trailing 19-12 halfway through the first half, the Bonnies cut the deficit to 36-35 at halftime.

Revolutionaries redshirt sophomore guard Christian Jones made two free throws to extend the lead 63-56 with eight minutes left.

Over the next seven minutes, Bonaventure cut the deficit to one point three times. Sophomore forward Joe Grahovac hit a 3-pointer to cut George Washington’s lead to 72-71 with 43 seconds left.

Following a George Washington free throw, Bonnies junior guard Buddy Simmons made both of his free throws to tie the game at 73 and force overtime.

The Revolutionaries scored 12 of the first 15 points in overtime to lead 85-76 with one minute left. The Bonnies shot 1 for 7 from the field and missed all five 3-point attempts during that span. Bonaventure’s only points came from senior forward Frank Mitchell. Mitchell led all scorers with 22 points and 18 rebounds.

The Bonnies fall to 15-15 (4-13, A-10) while the Revolutionaries improve to 17-13 (8-9, 7-10 A-10).
