The St. Bonaventure University Men’s basketball team snapped the University at Buffalo’s undefeated start to the season, winning 77-69, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
The Bonnies grabbed an early advantage, starting the game with eight unanswered points. Senior guard Cayden Charles scored the first five.
After Buffalo scored their first points of the game, back-to-back three pointers from senior forward Daniel Egbuniwe and freshman guard Ilia Ermakov, gave Bonaventure a 12-point lead.
The Bulls would start to push back, going on an 18-7 run, cutting the Bonnie’s lead to one.
Bonaventure would outscore Buffalo 17-12 to end the half, leading 38-32. Ermakov and junior guard Darryl “Buddy” Simmons II both ended the half with 8 points.
The Bulls outscored the Bonnies 12-8 to start the second half, trimming the deficit to two. Bonaventure would respond with a 17-9 run, extending their lead to 12 with under six minutes to go. Six Bonnies recorded points in that stretch, including Charles and Ermakov, who both notched four.
Buffalo would try to make a last-minute push, going on a 13-4 run in the final four minutes, narrowing the margin to five, but it wouldn’t be enough.
With the win, the Bonnies improve to 9-1. Buffalo falls 8-1.
Egbuniwe led Bonaventure with 15 points, while senior forward Frank Mitchell recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Despite the loss, the Bull’s junior guard Ryan Sabol led all players with 21 points.
Bonaventure will return home on Wednesday, to take on Colgate University. Buffalo will go on the road to face the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Tuesday. Both games can be streamed on ESPN+, with the Bonnies game available on the Bonnies Online Network, 100.1 FM Bradford and Olean, and 1340 AM Jamestown.
