ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.- The St. Bonaventure Bonnies powered past the Alfred Saxons 101-40 in Wednesday evening’s scrimmage at the Reilly Center.

Junior guard Buddy Simmons II and senior guard Cayden Charles led the way for the Bonnies’ offense. Simmons finished the contest with 24 points and three rebounds while Charles recorded 19 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. 

Alfred wasted no time in the exhibition. Senior forward Franlys Valenzuela scored the first points of the game on a three-pointer 16 seconds in.

Bonnies’ senior forward Frank Mitchell scored the first points for St. Bonaventure 39 seconds into the game, making it 3-2, Saxons.

After an 11-5 start for Alfred, just over three minutes in, St. Bonaventure went on a 23-2 run up until the 10:20 mark of the first half. In the run, Simmons II and junior guard Dasante Bowen scored nine and five points, respectively.

From 10:20 until 5:56 left in the opening half, the Saxons slowed the bleeding, holding the Bonnies offense to just nine points and keeping the score 37-21 St. Bonaventure.

In the final 4 minutes and 10 seconds of the half, the Bonnies kept their foot on the pedal. Sophomore center Andrew Osasuyi converted on a layup, Charles scored another five points, and Simmons II scored on a jumper. St. Bonaventure led 48-24 at the half.

Coming out of halftime, St. Bonaventure’s dominant effort continued. The Bonnies outscored the Saxons 27-9 for the first eight minutes of the second half, increasing their advantage to 75-33. In that span, Simmons II recorded eight points, Charles registered six, and Mitchell scored five.

In the final 10 minutes of the exhibition, St. Bonaventure outscored Alfred 26-7 to finalize their 101-40 exhibition victory.

“We take the exhibition game as serious as a regular season game,” said Bonnies Head Coach Mark Schmidt in a press conference. “You only have so many opportunities to put the uniform on so many times. We take it very seriously.”

The Bonnies open the regular season on the road against Bradley University on Monday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. Alfred opens their season hosting Lycoming College on Friday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m.
