APALACHIN, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men’s golf team finished third at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational hosted by Binghamton at Links at Hiawatha Landing on Oct. 5-6.
Putting together one of their strongest team efforts of the fall, the Bonnies finished at 12 under par over 36 holes, only behind Iona University at 15 under and Binghamton University at 13 under.
Senior Gabe Williams led the charge with a stellar performance, tied for third individually at five under. He carded consistent rounds of 72 (E) and 67, making a major climb up the leaderboard late. On day two, he made his only two bogeys of the round on holes 16 and 17, which played as two of the hardest holes on the course.
Senior Michael Bucko and junior Braddock Damore also delivered strong efforts. Bucko stood at five under through 16 holes and finished at four under, tied for fifth overall. Damore followed close behind at two under through 18 holes and finished tied for eighth at three under.
As a team, St. Bonaventure built momentum throughout the tournament, following an opening round of five under with a seven under second round to move inside the top three.
Binghamton, Iona, and Bonaventure, along with Lehigh University (6 under) and Le Moyne University (5 under), were the only teams finishing under par.
The Bonnies look to use this momentum in their next invitational at Bucknell University, a 54-hole showdown at the Bucknell Golf Club Oct. 12-14.
