BRONX, N.Y. — The New York Yankees stayed alive Wednesday night with a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox, forcing a winner-take-all Game 3 in the American League wild-card series.
The Yankees grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first when first baseman Ben Rice hit a two-run homer off right-hander Brayan Bello.
Boston tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third on a two-run single by second baseman Trevor Story off left-hander Carlos Rodón.
Yankees captain Aaron Judge delivered a go-ahead single in the fifth to put New York ahead 3-2. The right fielder has collected four hits in the series so far.
The Red Sox pulled even again when Trevor Story connected for his third RBI of the night, a solo shot into the left-field seats.
Boston threatened again in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but Yankees right-hander Fernando Cruz got Story to fly out to deep center to end the inning. Cruz roared as he walked off the mound, pounding his chest while the crowd at Yankee Stadium erupted.
In the eighth, second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. drew a two-out walk and catcher Austin Wells capped the scoring with a clutch game-winning RBI single to put New York back in front.
Yankees closer David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two for his first career postseason save.
First pitch for Game 3 is set for Thursday at 8:08 p.m. EDT, with both teams fighting to keep their season alive.
