Around this time of year, the NHL regularly holds its annual NHL All-Star Game, where the best players in the league come together to play in a pretty meaningless and trivial game.
This season, the league decided to change things up, hosting the 2025 Four Nations Face-Off. The United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland were the four teams that participated. Like the All-Star Game, the league’s marquee players were in attendance, but the stakes were significantly higher, and it was extremely evident.
The games in this tournament showcased some of the best hockey I have ever seen. It was evident that the players wanted to be there and wanted the prize. These games brought back the physicality of hockey that you don’t always see in the modern game.
In the first nine seconds of the round-robin matchup between Canada and the U.S., there were three separate back-to-back-to-back fights. Throughout the entire game, players did not shy away from using their bodies.
Hockey fans and non-hockey fans of all ages were intrigued, and the numbers proved it.
9.3 million Americans tuned in for the championship game, between Canada and the United States, which was the most ever for a hockey game in America. For comparison, the average All-Star Game gets around one million viewers.
It’s safe to say the NHL hit the jackpot with this tournament.
Even though Canada took the gold in a 3-2 overtime thriller against the United States, the tournament had the entire country talking about hockey. The publicity of this tournament was hugely important for hockey, as more people are starting to realize the greatness of the sport.
The All-Star Game is fun, but the Four Nations Faceoff is exactly what hockey is all about. This is one of the greatest ideas the NHL has ever had, and it would be in its best interest to make it a yearly event.
