By now, everyone has heard of the big news that Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce and Taylor
Swift are dating, according to the NFL. Now, for the Swifties of the world, this sounds great! For the NFL fans, they do not feel the same way.
From the fans’ point of view, Taylor Swift generates a lot of unnecessary publicity. These repeated showings of her at every game became more of a distraction rather than a shoutout. This distraction turned into a big spectacle for the NFL. The amount of revenue that she has brought in is very good for the Chiefs overall. However, the amount of people, including myself, who hate her publicity has risen. Even at the Bills vs Chiefs playoff game at Highmark stadium, the NFL posted an Instagram video showing that Taylor Swift has arrived at the game, despite the Buffalo Bills players being in the same position as her.
Taylor and Travis have become the biggest event to ever happen in the NFL for years – arguably even bigger than the Super Bowl – because this relationship has attracted an unbelievable number of new fans. These fans, just to see Travis send loving looks to his girlfriend who is screaming in the box above, have generated significantly more income for the teams. However, these fans are not coming for the actual game of football. From one perspective, I can see why a Taylor Swift fan would watch so that Travis can score. On the flip side of this, Patrick Mahomes would throw what looked like airballs and easier balls than Josh Allen has thrown to Travis Kelce for the whole season. This kind of attention to Travis made every fan want to see every single second of when the couple hugged, kissed, saw each other, and even when seen after Travis’s season ended for the Chiefs after the Super Bowl.
Nowadays, the couple has had some ups and downs. If you did not see the video, Travis yelled at Andy Reid, the head coach of the Chiefs, during the second quarter of the Super Bowl game against the 49ers. Despite what the Swifties say about Travis, this was completely unnecessary. After winning the game, the couple were seen hugging on the field. Now, I do not dislike Taylor Swift, I love her music and all of her accomplishments; however, her image is being tested by being in this relationship.
This couple has turned the NFL into a spectacle focusing on drama, rather than focusing on the sport. Instead of the majority of people watching because they love football for the actual game, you now have people who only cheer for the Chiefs just because Travis plays for them. I do not like this due to the knowledge of the game being thrown out the window for these new fans – which is basically all of the Taylor Swift fans. You may disagree with me, but Taylor Swift has given a new reputation to the NFL. This reputation has generated more money, yes, but at what cost?
