RIYL: The Rocket Summer, The Maine
Recommended Tracks: “Hey! We OK”, “Awkward Conversations (Best Day Of My Life)”
Grade: B
It’s always nice to see a band mature as time goes on, and on their sixth studio album Never Shout Never seems to have done just that. Far behind them are the angsty teenage pop rock tunes and replacing them are an interesting experimental indie sound.
“BOOM!” is their most experimental song where they decide to almost exclusively use sounds for the chorus. One of the “lyrics” is “shoobybabibu” so if hearing someone sing that interests you then you would definitely love this. Interestingly enough it’s one of the better songs on the album. It’s certainly not traditional but the combination of lyrics and sounds throughout the whole track blends really well.
If you’re looking for something more traditional then “Hey! We OK” is the definition of indie pop. Much like the rest of the album, it has an electronic beat with guitars and drums sprinkled in among the electronic beats. “Awkward Conversations” has a fantastically catchy chorus but other than that it’s the definition of indie pop.
If you like indie pop then you really can not go wrong with this album but if you hate it then there is no reason for you to ever listen to it.
