Honest Album Review: Depression Cherry by Beach House

By: Jacob Seifert

With every band or artist you listen to, there is a story on how you stumbled across them, especially for your favorite band or artist. For me, I discovered the Dream Pop duo Beach House consisting of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally through their hit song, “Space Song.” My friend played it for me as we watched a beautiful sunset on Lake Erie back in the summer of 2019. Once I got back home, I listened to the song at least 10 times on repeat. I had to listen to the album where the song came from named Depression Cherry.

The album cover is a dark red that has little white text at the top that says, “beach house depression cherry”. As soon as I hit play, the atmospheric synths put me in an immediate trance for the 44:45-minute duration of the record – which felt as if it was over in mere seconds. I was awed at the sweet treat my ears just received.

Beach House has a calming, simplistic sound – which, in my opinion, is a great addition to the music you listen to. Everyone needs some music that puts them at ease and that is what this album does for me. Yes, the Dream Pop duo’s sound is slower paced and quiet, but their music does not by any means put me to sleep. The peaceful instrumentation itches my brain in the right place.

The flow of the album track-to-track is wonderful. The lyrics are too. On top of that, the singer of the band, Victoria Legrand, has a majestic voice that is easily one-of-a-kind. This album is worth listening to just for her voice alone.

If you are looking for an experimental album that explores different types of sound, this is not necessarily the album or band for you. They are so non-experimental that people argue that all their music sounds copy-and-pasted. In a sense, they are right when it comes to this duo on the surface level, but overall this is not true. Every song they put out is unique in its own way.

I could not count the amount of times I have listened to this album. It has a special place in my heart and always will. I could never get old of this album. I love Depression Cherry, although that may be my bias since they are my favorite duo/band. I am not forcing you to listen to the whole album but at least listen to Space Song and you will see why this duo is one of a kind.
